- Amazon has announced the closure of its app store for devices Android.
- The store will continue to operate exclusively on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.
- Final closure is scheduled for August 25, 2025.
- Amazon Coins will also become worthless after the closure.
For over a decade, the Amazon Appstore has been an alternative to the Google Play Store for downloading and installing apps on Android devices. However, the American company has confirmed that this option will soon disappear for anyone who doesn't own an Amazon device.
Amazon's digital app store arrived on the Android ecosystem in 2011, offering a diverse selection of apps and games. Over time, it became an attractive option thanks to promotions and exclusive offers, such as the ability to get paid apps for free during promotional periods. However, the company has decided to remove the Amazon Appstore from Android devices outside its ecosystem.
When will it be no longer available?
The final closure of this Android app store will take place on August 25, 2025. From that date, users will no longer be able to access the store from devices other than Amazon's own Fire TV or Fire Tablet.
For those who have downloaded apps from the Amazon Appstore, these will continue to function on their devices, but they will no longer receive updates or support from the developers. This poses a long-term security problem , as many apps require regular updates to fix bugs or vulnerabilities that may arise.
Amazon Coins will no longer have value
In addition to the closure of the store on Android devices, another significant change is the disappearance of Amazon Coins , the virtual currency used in the app store to make purchases. Amazon has announced that users who still have a balance of these coins must spend them before the final closure, as they will lose their value completely after the deadline.
The store will continue to exist on Amazon devices
Although Amazon has decided to end its store's presence on Android devices outside its ecosystem, this doesn't mean it will disappear completely . The Amazon Appstore will remain available exclusively on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices , indicating a strategy by the company to strengthen its ecosystem and focus its services on its own products.
This move could be interpreted as an attempt by Amazon to reduce costs and effort on a platform where the Google Play Store dominates by a wide margin, focusing its store solely on its own devices. Those who relied on the Amazon Appstore on Android will need to find alternatives before the store closes its doors on August 25, 2025.
