Are you worried about the idea of “Can I afford to go out?” Let me share some of my best tips. I signed the lease for my apartment a few years ago. A wise friend suggested that I live alone for at least a year to prove that I am capable.
Although I was nervous, I also felt well prepared. It was a stressful time, but I felt prepared. Finding an apartment, especially one you can afford, is not easy, but you can get there with proper planning.
How much money can you spend?
It is important to know how much it costs to rent a flat or house. You will spend more money on your landlord if you live alone. There are a few important things to remember:
Decide how much you can afford before the situation becomes overwhelming
It's a good rule of thumb for calculating your expenses. Living expenses should not exceed 30% of your incomeThis is also known as “net income,” meaning that $2.000 of monthly income after taxes and contributions would force me to find housing under $600. My rent would leave me with $1.400 to cover my food and other expenses. This was the amount I was able to find in an apartment in downtown Phoenix when I moved. I decided on the most expensive apartment because it had amenities, but I couldn’t live independently.
Know the price of Public services
My home is in Phoenix, Arizona. The brambles don't roll in front of your car like in the movies, but in the summer it's incredibly hot. It's so hot that sometimes our airport closes because the planes can blow out their tires as soon as they land on the runway.
Summers last longer than other seasons and the heat can lead to high electricity bills. I'm not kidding when I say that my BF paid $400 in the month of July alone. No matter where you live, your electricity bills can vary. However, electricity bills can be expensive in extreme weather conditions, such as long winters.
You may not be able to plan for unexpected expenses
When considering what part of town or apartment you live in, it's important to remember what expenses you don't have to pay when you live with someone else. Are you responsible for paying for food? What about household items, like shampoo and laundry soap?
I hadn't thought about doing laundry because everywhere I lived had a washer and dryer. My friend always added $20 to her living expenses since she didn't have a unit. So my friend insisted I find a place with one. My apartment doesn't have one, but I got at least six free laundry mats from the place, which was another incentive for me.
How much should you have saved?
Suppose you feel confident about all of the above, congratulations! It's time to find your place. It's time to determine how much money you can save. It's expensive to move!
Below are the maximum costs you should consider:
Moving expenses
Moving to a new apartment and packing your belongings can be expensive. It depends on the distance and the amount of stuff you have to pack. All of these expenses can be expensive, from renting trucks to buying boxes. Our moving checklist is especially helpful if you're planning to move out of state.
No deposit fees
A deposit is required for both individual unit owners and apartment complexes. The deposit is usually the first and last month's rent, plus a security and background fee. Complexes may require a deposit for keys, fobs, or keys to access doors and parking spaces. It's important to ask in advance, so you can save an appropriate amount in advance.
Utility Bills – Advance
No one ever tells you (okay, maybe I wasn't listening), that utility companies may ask for a down payment when opening an account in your name. Phoenix residents have two options for paying for electricity: they can choose to pay as they go or monthly. Both require deposits, but monthly service requires a larger deposit. Sometimes they'll ask for the maximum amount of your property's electric bill if there's no credit. Don't forget about internet, water, and gas.
Furniture
The other thing no one tells you when you move into your new home is that furniture isn't cheap, and your dreams are bound to be shattered. After taxes and shipping, I spent $700 on the dream couch I wanted. I love my couch, and I'm still using it six years later, but I wish I'd known how much it was going to cost.
Appliance
You will need to purchase a starter kit if you want to start from scratch. Home furnitureYou'll need at least bathroom and kitchen supplies, plus cleaning supplies. You'll also need paper products, soap, and cooking basics like spices and cooking oil.
How to increase your budget for apartments
You can live independently if you have enough money saved for the new adventure. Here are some of my best tips.
Spread the word You are looking for
Let people know you're looking for a new place to call your own. People's lives are constantly changing, and the economy is always changing. Maybe a friend is looking for tenants for her rental. Or maybe your boss's sister is looking to sublet her house while she goes abroad. One of my friends told me she was looking recently, and another friend pointed out that a friend from the Derby had a duplex open. I'll help her get settled tomorrow.
Think differently when it comes to location
Living in the coolest new neighborhood sounds great, but it's often in the midst of gentrification, which means high rent prices. You might consider moving next door if you want to stay a part of the excitement. Chances are, if you don't live on the main street, you can find a more affordable rent. You'll have access to all the amenities without paying the high price.
Urban transit
If you don't drive and rely on urban transportation, this could be a change in where you live. Lower transportation costs can mean more savings or money to live comfortably.
Question about public services
Ask about the average cost of utilities. If you're nervous like me, ask ahead of time what the average cost of utilities is for the home before you decide to live there. You might get lucky and get away with it. You can afford it, as I said above. Using utilities can make or break your business. If you are in extreme conditions
Order items well in advance
You'll need to be more specific about how much you want to save for your move. You can shop early to get great deals, and you can take advantage of sales and clearance sales. Even though it will cost you more to move your items, you can save hundreds of dollars.
Summarizing
It's an exciting time in your life to be living on your own. You want to avoid making common mistakes. You also want to be able to afford to move and still meet your financial goals. You can start a new chapter by planning well and saving. We've got your back.
