Tiendas Orange (or Orange Espange SAU) is the Spanish branch of the French multinational company Orange, responsible for offering telephone, internet and television services in Spain.

In 1998 and 1999, the Spanish government launched competitions to award mobile phone licenses. In both cases, France Telecom applied and lost. However, by 2005, the company Amena had significantly increased the price of its rates, so it ceded its ownership to France Telecom. In October 2006, the disappearance of Amena and the birth of Orange was announced.

History of Orange

Orange SA , initially known as Direction générale des Télécommunications and later as France Télécom, is a French multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Paris. It provides mobile telephony, fixed-line telephony, internet, mobile internet, and IPTV services globally.

It has 263 million customers globally and employs 100,000 people in France and 170,000 in the rest of the world. The company is part of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index. Despite currently being identified as the largest French telecommunications group, the Orange brand originated as a mobile operator in the United Kingdom.

In the early 1990s, Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa took control of the British Microtel Communications Ltd. The new owners decided that the local company should have a new identity to represent its new phase, so the "Orange" brand and logo were designed.

In 1999, Orange was acquired by the German telecommunications company Mannesmann, which in turn was absorbed a year later by the Vodafone Group. However, the European Commission forced Vodafone to divest some of its assets after the merger, as the EU authorities believed that the size of the resulting company could be detrimental to competition.

France Télécom thus took advantage of the situation to acquire the company, the name and the commercial brand "Orange" from Vodafone in an operation valued at 42 billion euros.

The acquisition was a great pleasure for the French operator, since over the years it had been abandoning all the commercial brands with which it had been operating in the different countries in which it was present in order to gradually unify them under the Orange brand.

This unification reached its peak when, on 1 July 2013, the company decided that the Orange brand would replace its own name and that of its group, thus abandoning the historic "France Télécom" brand.
