If you've landed on this article, you're undoubtedly feeling frustrated seeing ctfmon.exe in your Task Manager repeatedly. And since this program runs automatically all the time and reappears even after the process has ended, it might create a sense of fear that it's a virus or malware.
So, what exactly is it? Is it a virus or malware, or a legitimate Windows program ? If it's legitimate, why does it keep running and reappear after the process ends? This article will cover many more questions related to the ctfmon.exe program. I'll also tell you how to disable it on your PC.
What is CTF Loader?
CTF stands for Collaborative Translation Framework and Microsoft Windows uses this framework to provide text support to users using other input applications. And for CTF to come into play, Windows uses the CTF Loader program.
This program helps Windows perform tasks such as virtual keyboard input, voice input, and handwriting, etc.
Windows also uses the CTF Loader program to activate the Microsoft Office language bar.
Language bar is the feature that provides flexibility to user to switch between different black and white input languages in Windows operating system.
What is Ctfmon.Exe?
As far as the name ctfmon.exe is concerned, it is the actual Windows .exe program file that is executed when Windows runs the CTF Loader program. So, CTF Loader is the name of the program and ctfmon.exe is its actual .exe program file.
Is ctfmon.exe a virus or malware?
From the explanation above of what CTF Loader is, it's quite clear that it's not a virus or malware . Instead, it's a legitimate Microsoft program that runs in the background and is used by Windows to fulfill some basic input requirements. It's simply a basic program that runs the Collaborative Translation Framework.
Antivirus and antimalware in ctfmon.exe
The CTF Loader program has the original filename ctfmon.exe, but it actually runs as CTF Loader on your PC. It's a byte file, typically between 10 and 15 KB in size , located in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory . You can even scan the ctfmon.exe file with any antivirus or antimalware software, as they will all report it as completely safe.
Does ctfmon.exe affect your PC's performance?
The CTF Loader program, or ctfmon.exe, is an extremely small program that performs fairly basic functions, namely controlling alternative user input and the Office language bar. Therefore, in most cases, CTF Loader does not affect your PC's performance and runs smoothly in the background. Thus, in my opinion, CTF Loader, also known as ctfmon.exe, is a lightweight, safe, and harmless program.
Fix problems with ctfmon.exe
Even though this is a legitimate program, it can still cause problems, and in such cases, you may need to take some troubleshooting steps. Below we will show you some solutions you can try to fix the most common problems.
Solution 1: Disable CFMon service
If you do not wish to use any of these services, you can simply disable them from the services panel. To do so, follow these steps:
- Press the Windows key and the R key at the same time to open the Run box.
- Now type “Services.msc” and press enter.
- From the services, look for “Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Pad Service” as you scroll down.
- Double-click it and select Disable in the startup type options.
This should prevent it from starting when the system boots and therefore prevent any problems. Although sometimes an extra step may be required to disable it from the Windows Task Scheduler. To do so, you need to:
- Open the run box as mentioned above and type taskschd.msc.
- Navigate to the following location: Task Scheduler Library / Microsoft / Windows / TextServicesFramework
- Now choose MSCTFMonitor and select disable
That's it. The CTF Loader should not start automatically.
Solution 2: Update your system

So, to fix it, you can try updating your system. Since updating the system can help fix any Windows system-related issues, it is recommended that you do it as follows:
- Open the Windows Settings app using the Windows + I shortcut.
- Now click on Updates & Security.
- Finally, click Check for Updates and let the system search for updates and download them.
- Once the download is complete, you can click on the reboot button there to reboot and install those updates.
- After successfully updating the system, you can try using the CTF loader. This should now work without any issues.
Solution 3: Check and repair system files
Sometimes system files get corrupted, which leads to issues like this. So, it is better to run the System File Checker command and fix all the issues. To do so, follow these steps:
- Open the symbol of the system as administrator. Otherwise, you can use the shortcut Windows + X, then press A to open Power Shell as administrator.
- Now type the command SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.
- You will need to wait a while as this may take longer to complete, so please be patient.
That's it. If the process completes without errors, reboot your system and you should be able to fix the problem.
