How to create potions in Minecraft

Do you want to learn how to create potions in minecraft? Minecraft is a game that encourages exploration, interaction with the world, creative thinking, and crafting. There is something so satisfying about mining, collecting, and combining seemingly random objects to create something functional.

From weapons to furniture and building materials, there is a lot to discover and a lot to do with the highly interactive world of Minecraft and its components. Our focus for this article is potion making in Minecraft. We invite you to stay with us.

What are potions in Minecraft?

In Minecraft lore, potions are consumable or throwable items that give players a specific status effect. They can restore hit points, improve strength or speed, enhance jumping, and the like.

However, they can also do exactly the opposite; damage HP, penalize Speed, weaken Resistances, etc.

Here you can learn about: Fix Outdated Server Error In Minecraft

These items are incredibly useful when playing Minecraft survival mode (or even in the minecraft adventure mode) as power-ups and weapons. Crafting them can be a bit tricky, but the results are ultimately worth the experience.

How to make potions in Minecraft

Knowing how to make potions in Minecraft may not be on the same level as knowing how to make a Minecraft server, but it’s still a fairly lengthy process, initially. Once you get the hang of it (and once you start stocking up on ingredients), you should have no trouble crafting potions in your sleep!

Gather your resources to create your potions in Minecraft

Ingredients are the foundation of all potions. You'll need several components to successfully craft a potion, and ingredients are definitely one of those non-negotiables.

The bad news is that acquiring ingredients can be quite risky. We're talking about risky Nether. As in, "Five of the ingredients you need can only be found in the Nether", risky.

This means you will need to do the following:

  1. Build a portal
  2. Enter the underworld
  3. Defeat the monsters
  4. Finding a Nether Fortress (without getting lost)

For this step, you definitely need to plan accordingly. We recommend armor and weapons with enchantments. And snowballs. As many snowballs as you can get your hands on. They're pretty effective against Blazes and ridiculously easy to craft - just dig snow with a shovel.

  1. Step 1:: Once you are in the Nether, look for the nearest Nether Fortress as soon as possible. You will find Nether Wart (ingredient) growing in the soul sand (optional but highly recommended ingredient) at the bottom of the entrance stairs. Mine them as quickly as you can.
  2. Step 2:: Also try to locate a Blaze Generator. If you kill the Blaze, it will drop a Blaze Rod (you'll need this later).
  3. Step 3:: If you don't want to get hopelessly lost, consider leaving markers to highlight the way back to the portal. Remember that every block traveled in the Nether is eight blocks traveled in the Overworld.
  4. Step 4:: If the Nether is proving too harsh, try switching to “peaceful” mode.
  5. Step 5:: Alternatively, and if you already know what Minecraft mods are, you can search for mods that even the Nether playing field.

NOTE: : Once you're safely out of the Nether, continue gathering the other ingredients in the Overworld. There are quite a few!

List of ingredients

Overworld ingredients to create your potions in Minecraft are as follows:

  1. Dragon breath: thrown by an Ender dragon
  2. Shiny melon: create with one (1) melon and eight (8) gold nuggets.
  3. Golden carrot: create with one (1) carrot and eight (8) gold nuggets.
  4. Phantom membranes: thrown by ghosts
  5. White-spotted puffer: catch with a bucket of water or a fishing rod
  6. Rabbit foot: falling dead rabbits
  7. Eye of spider: thrown by spiders and murdered witches
  8. Sugarcraft using one (1) sugar cane
  9. Turtle shell: creates with five (5) shields (thrown by baby turtles)

Inferior ingredients

  1. Fire bars: thrown by flames in the abyssal fortresses
  2. Ghast Tear: Dropped by Ghasts (look for the ones hovering over the lava)
  3. Magma cream: dropped by magma cubes OR created with one (1) fire powder and one (1) slime ball
  4. Nether Wart: Located in Nether Fortresses; grows in Soul Sand
  5. Soul sand: optional; used to grow Nether Wart in the Overworld

Overworld Potion Modifiers

  1. Fermented Spider Eye: create with one (1) spider eye, one (1) brown mushroom and one (1) sugar
  2. Glowstone Powder – mine from Glowstones
  3. Gunpowder: Dropped by Creepers, Ghasts and Witches; also found in chests
  4. Redstone – Redstone Ore Mine

Create your own tools to make your potions in Minecraft

Once you have all your ingredients, you will need to craft your other tools and resources:

  1. A brewing station (you can't brew potions without it)
  2. A cauldron (optional if you have a water source nearby)
  3. Glass bottles (you need to pour and store your potions somehow)
  4. and Blaze Powder (fuel for its preparation).

Fortunately, all of these components are infinitely easier to obtain compared to Nether ingredients.

Brewing stand

Pretty much exactly what the name implies. This is what you'll use to brew your potions in Minecraft.

You will need three (3) Cobblestone Blocks and one (1) Blaze Rod.

Brewing stand
  1. Step 1: – You must have the Workspace communication
  2. Step 2:: Place one (1) cobblestone block on each of the bottom three squares of the crafting grid; then place one (1) fire rod on the middle square
  3. Step 3:: Once it's crafted, drag your completed crafting base down into your quick access bar

Cauldron (optional)

If you have a water source nearby, a cauldron isn't necessary. But if you have iron to spare, it can make potion making in Minecraft a lot easier.

See, you first need to fill empty glass bottles with water to brew potions. That would require you to go to a water source. A cauldron would be like having a small pool of water next to your brewing stand.

An iron bucket with water can fill a cauldron. You can then right-click on the Cauldron (as you would with the water fountain) with an empty glass bottle to fill it. This drains 1/3 of the Cauldron's contents.

You can fill three bottles with water at one time.

Another neat trick is to transfer existing potions to an empty cauldron. The process is pretty much the same; right-click on an empty cauldron with a full potion bottle and the contents will be transferred.

You can fill the Cauldron with three bottles of the same potion. You can also fill three empty bottles with any potion that is in the Cauldron.

But again, brewing potions near a water source works just as well. You just won't have the additional options of storage / transfer. To craft a cauldron, you will need seven (7) iron ingots.

  1. Step 1: – You will need to have the Workspace communication
  2. Step 2:: Add the seven (7) iron ingots to the outer squares of the crafting grid, forming a “U”.
  3. Step 3:: Once it's crafted, drag your full cauldron down into your hotbar

bottles

You need a way to store your finished potions and carry them with you. You will need three (3) glass blocks.

  1. Step 1: – You will need to have the Workbench open
  2. Step 2:: Place one (1) glass block on the first and third square of the center row of the crafting grid
  3. Step 3:: Place one (1) glass block in the middle square on the bottom row of the crafting grid (the final shape should be a small "v")
  4. Step 4:: This will give you three (3) glass bottles. Drag them down to your Hotbar

Blaze Powder

You're almost done! The last thing you need to make potions in Minecraft is Blaze Powder. This is essentially the fire that fuels your brewing stand. It's pretty simple, really! All you need is a Blaze Rod.

  1. Step 1: – You must have the Workbench open
  2. Step 2:: Place Blaze Rod on any square of the crafting grid
  3. Step 3:: the final result should be Blaze Powder (x2)
  4. Step 4: – Place Blaze Powder(s) in your inventory

Optional Side Quest: A Nether Wart Farm

We mentioned earlier that you can find Nether Warts growing in Soul Sand on steps leading to a Nether Fortress. If you managed to collect Soul Sand, you can create a Nether Wart farm. Nether Wart is used to create an Uneasy Potion (more on that later) which is basically the base of all potions in Minecraft.

  • Farming it in the Overworld saves you from another harrowing, deadly trip to the Nether.
Rockstar delays GTA 6 and sets a new release date

Simply place Soul Sand blocks on the ground and plant one (1) Nether Wart in it. Harvest normally when fully grown.

Just as there are Minecraft mods that teach kids creativity and innovative thinking, the base game itself can teach kids a lot about being patient and resourceful.

Awkward Potion: Your First Potion

Now that you have all your tools and ingredients, you are ready to brew an Awkward Potion. As we said, you cannot create other potions until you have an Awkward Potion ready to use.

  1. Step 1:: fill empty glass bottles with water (using a water fountain or your cauldron)
  2. Step 2:: open preparation stand
your first potion
your first potion
  1. Step 3:: You will see three bottom squares on the brew stand grid designated with a “bottle” icon; place one (1) full glass bottle in each square
  2. Step 4:: Place one (1) bottom wart on the top square
  3. Step 5:- You will see a square in the top left corner designated with a "fire" icon; place one (1) Blaze Powder there

This process takes about 20 seconds and turns all three water bottles into Awkward Potions. On its own, an Awkward Potion doesn't do anything. You'll need to add other ingredients to make it usable. By adding modifiers, such as Glowstone Dust or Gunpowder, you can make the effects more powerful and/or last longer.

Types of potions in Minecraft to make

As you explore the wonderful world of potion making in Minecraft, let us introduce you to a couple of concepts you need to know, specifically the different types of potions you can create and the different types of effects.

First: The types of potions. You really only have two: potions you can drink and “Splash” potions, or potions you can throw.

Drinkables vs Throwables

Most potions in Minecraft that have an awkward potion base are meant to be consumed. These drinkable potions have specific effects and durations and are practically useless if thrown (unless they are made into a Splash potion).

Splash potions, on the other hand, are great for dealing damage or handling multiple opponents. Their results are either short-lived or persistent, depending on the ingredients and components used.

Persistent splash and extended potions

You can add more ingredients to an existing consumable or Splash potion to prolong its effects.

Brewing a Splash Potion

To make a splash potion, you need the following ingredients:

  1. One (1) gunpowder
  2. one (1) fire powder
  3. and three (3) regular potions, that is, the potion you want to turn into a splash potion.

Let's say you want to craft a healing splash potion. First you need to craft a healing potion (recipe below). Want to craft a poison splash potion? Craft the poison first (recipe below).

For this example, let's create a splash poison potion.

  1. Step 1:: open preparation stand

  1. Step 2:: Place one (1) poison potion on each of the bottom three squares
  2. Step 3:: Place one (1) gunpowder in the top square
  3. Step 4:: Place one (1) Blaze Powder in the upper left square

Brewing a Lingering Splash Potion

Lingering Splash Potions are great for maximizing damage. Much like Splash Potions, you will need to first brew a regular Potion and turn it into a Splash Potion to achieve a Lingering Splash Potion. You will also need one (1) Dragon's Breath and one (1) Fire Powder.

For this example, we used a poison potion to create a poison cloud.

  1. Step 1:: open preparation stand
lingering splash potion
Lingering Splash Potion
  1. Step 2:: Place one (1) poison potion on one of the three lower squares
  2. Step 3:: Place one (1) Dragon's Breath on the top square
  3. Step 4:: Place one (1) Blaze Powder in the upper left square

Splash potions are usually potions with negative effects, as there is no point in consuming a poison or slow potion. However, there is a Splash healing potion, which you can use to heal your friends from afar.

On that note, potions in Minecraft can also be classified by three effects: Positive, Negative, and Mixed.

Examples of positive potions would:

  1. healing potions
  2. Night Vision Potions
  3. and strength potions.

Examples of negative potions would be: as we mentioned,

  • Poison or slowness.

These are the ones you'll want to have on hand when you take on Survival or Adventure mode.

And if you decided to play with deadly mods, such as, for example, a Dragon Minecraft mod, you will definitely want as many positive potions in your inventory as possible.

Mixed potions, as the name suggests, combine a negative effect to balance a positive effect. A good example of this would be Turtle Master Potion. You gain increased resistance for 20 seconds, but are also Slowed for the same amount of time.
