Fix Error Something Went Wrong And Your PIN Is Not Available

Some users have reported an issue with the login feature. Windows Hello, where the computer rejects the PIN provided by the user. When entering the PIN, the error message appears on the screen Something went wrong and your PIN is not available.

Typically, this can happen when the access control lists in the NGC folder are corrupted, in which case you will have to reset the list to get the PIN working again. In this article, we will guide you through this entire process and show you how to resolve the above-mentioned error message quite easily, so just continue on.

How to fix something went wrong and your PIN is not available error?

It turns out that Windows Hello is a feature that allows users to access their Windows devices fairly easily and instantly. This includes biometrics, facial recognition, and more.

PINs are supposed to make it easier to Login into an account and serve as another login method. Essentially, a four-digit pin is the easiest way to log into Windows. However, when it stops working and gives you an error message, it can be frustrating.

As we mentioned, the error message we mentioned above can sometimes occur when the ACLs are corrupted, however, that is not the only case. In addition to that, the problem can also arise when you do not have permissions over the Ngc folder, in which case you will have to modify the folder permissions to resolve the issue.

With that being said, let’s get started and show you how to fix the error something went wrong and your PIN is not available, without further delay.

Change NGC permissions

As it turns out, the first thing you need to do when you encounter the issue in question is to go ahead and change the permissions of the NGC folder. As we mentioned, the problem in some cases can arise in the NGC folder where biometric data and everything else is stored.

In such a scenario, granting yourself owner permissions over the folder will fix the issue. Now, to do this, you will need an administrator account as the folder resides inside the Windows directory and you need an administrator account to access it. That being said, follow these steps to do so:

• First, open Windows Explorer. You can do this by pressing the Windows key + E on your keyboard.
• Now, if your system drive is C:  paste the following path into the address bar to navigate to it:

C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft

• In case your system drive is different, please change C: on the previous route appropriately.
• Once you are there, right click on the folder ngc and in the drop-down menu, select where it says Properties

• Following this, you must change to the Security tab and then click on the option that says Advanced, right at the bottom of the screen.

• After this, in the window identified as Advanced security settings for NGC, you have to click on the option that says Change next to Owner.

• Then, in the Select User or Group window, click the button Advanced.

• After that, you have to click on the button Search now on the left.

• This will show you the list of accounts on the computer in Search results.
• Find your user account and then click on it. Next, you will need to make sure to press the button that says Accept. After that, do click en Accept within the Select User or Group window as well.

• Once you've done that, go ahead and click on the checkbox that says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Then click on the button Apply.

• When you do this, a Security dialog box will appear. Windows asking you if you want to change the permissions by giving yourself Full Control over the object. Click Yes. Then in the tracking dialog box, click click en OK.
• After doing that, go ahead and close the window. Properties.
• Then right click on the Ngc folder again and go to Properties

• Next, you need to switch to the tab Security. There make sure you click on the option that says Advanced.
• After that, you need to make sure that you click on the checkbox that says Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object. Following this, you must press the button that says Apply.

• In the Security dialog box Windows that appears, you have to click where the option appears Yes.
• After taking ownership of the folder, you need to click on the button Change permissions.
• After this, you must follow up by clicking on the button Add. If you don't see the button Change permissions, click the Add button provided.

• This will take you to the window of Ngc Permission Entry.
• There, you need to click on the option Select a principal It is located at the top.

• In the Select User and Group window that appears, type SYSTEM in the box Enter the name of the object to select.
• Once you have done the above, you need to go ahead and click on the button Check names which is located on the left of the screen.
• Now, you have to click on the button Accept.
• When you finally return to the window Ngc Permission Entry, go ahead and click on the checkbox Full Control en Basic permissions.

• After that, click on the button Accept. Then, do click en Accept inside the advanced security window and continue clicking OK in the window Properties.

With this, you have given yourself full control. Once this is done, go ahead and check if the problem persists.

Reset access control lists

Another reason why the issue in question may arise is due to access control lists or ACLs. This can happen when ACLs are corrupted on the Ngc folder in some cases.

If this case is applicable, you can resolve the issue by simply resetting the Access Control Lists. Doing this is pretty simple, so just follow the steps below:

• First of all, go ahead and open a symbol of the system elevated. To do this, open the start menu and search md. Now, you need to right-click on the result displayed on the screen and press the option that says Run as administrator that appears within the drop-down menu.

• Now, in the command prompt window, you have to copy and paste the following path and then press the Enter key:

icacls C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc/T/Q/C/ RESET

• If your system drive is different, replace C: in your case appropriately.
• Once you've done that, you need to add a new PIN.
• After this, the problem should no longer be there.

Delete the Ngc folder

Finally, if the solutions have not solved the problem for you, then the problem may be due to a corruption in the Ngc folder on your system. In such a case, your last resort to fix the problem would be to delete the Ngc folder.

When you delete the Ngc folder, all the previous biometric data, PINs that are attached to the user account will be gone and thus you will be able to set up from the beginning again. Once you do that, the problem should no longer be there and you will be good to go.

Note: If you are having a problem in a domain, we recommend that you remove the computer that is having the problem from the domain. After doing that, rename the computer that was being problematic and then join it to the domain. Once you do this, you can move the computer object to its respective organizational unit and the problem should go away.
