How to change your character in Rust
The only way you can change your character in Rust is using an account Steam differentIt is also important to note that if you do not like the look of the character generated with the new Steam account, you will have to repeat this process. This can become quite tedious and leave you with multiple Steam accounts. Here are the steps you need to follow:
Step 1: set up a new steam account

Step 2: Link your Steam accounts via Steam Family Share. This helps you keep track of your different Steam accounts, especially if you plan on using multiple accounts until you end up with a character you like. Remember, you'll need to play Rust with this account. This character won't be available on your other accounts.

Step 3: Start a game on Steam from your new Steam account. If you start a game from your new Steam account, you will be assigned a new, random character.
Gender and race change
Almost every RUST player, both veteran and newcomer, has been looking for ways to customize the gender and race of their RUST character. With the ever-increasing clamor for this feature, RUST Experimental does not support changing race or gender. Numerous guides and Tricks have appeared over the years, sharing potential ways to modify or impact your character. Your mileage will vary across scenarios.
Codes to change gender, hairstyle and skin tone
To change the gender of the character in the game, players can use gdr20m for a male character and gdr20f for a female character. For the character's color, players can use rcW_low to Low White, rcW_high to Heavy White, rcB_low to Low Black, rcB_high to Heavy Black y rc_asn to Asian.
To get the bust and size desired, players can use codes like sz6s for size 1, sz6m for size 2 and sz6l for size 3. There are five codes available for different hairstyles. Players can use rcH_1 for hairstyle 1, rcH_2 for hairstyle 2, rcH_3, for hairstyle 3, rcH_4, for hairstyle 4 and rcH_5 for hairstyle 5.
It is worth noting that these codes do not guarantee that players will get the desired character in the multiplayer-only game. There is another way that players can customize their character in the game, but it requires switching to a different Steam account, as we mentioned earlier.
However, why exactly don't they support it?
The developers of RUST designed it this way. This decision became a reality for all RUST players when female models were introduced to the game in Devblog 105. Triggering one of the biggest gaming controversies in history. Up until this point, roughly over 2 years, RUST characters were always selected as male, with the race being selected randomly.
Media outlets such as PC Gamer and Kotaku caught wind of the developers' decision to part ways as it made headlines on every news and gaming site. After the flames were fanned and public outcry made its way across the internet, Garry's response to the harsh criticism was published in The Guardian. He details in a lengthy forum post why exactly his studio made this decision.
How does RUST character race and gender selection work?
For all RUST players, their character's gender and race will be automatically determined based on their unique Steam ID. It's important to note that players have no control over their Steam IDs, beyond creating new Steam accounts. Thus leaving the gender and race selection process up to chance.

Special launch parameters
One particular guide that many people are coming across, from Steam user Raichuu, details how you can manipulate your game's launch settings to potentially impact your character's traits. These methods have been patched and no longer affect your character.
Steam Family Share Accounts
Other methods users will encounter detail setting up new Steam accounts and linking them to the Steam Family Share feature. This does not change your current character, but can be used to create a completely new character. Each new account allows another chance in the random selection process.
RUST Add-ons and Mods
On the popular Oxide Mod forums, there are many threads from players requesting the creation of a custom mod, along with hints and tips on how to create one. These have become dead ends in finding ways to customize a character's gender and race. Since the Steam ID cannot be manipulated, there is no method for plugins to effect this.
Admin command inside developer CVARs
When female avatars were being tested, RUST developer Andre had introduced a console variable dev.gender that could be used by RUST server admins and moderators. However, it has also been removed and is no longer available. This was originally brought to our attention by the good people at Rustafied.
Administrators are no longer all women
The female model is not yet ready to be implemented. Instead of making it live (and still allowing testing), Andre has created a cvar from developer (dev.gender) to allow developers and moderators to set their gender on the fly (and have everyone be male by default).
Admin Note: If you want to be a woman again, set up 'global.developer true' and then changes dev.gender from -1 to 1.
How have players reacted to the change in the game?
The change has angered some Rust players who want the freedom to change their appearance in-game. Not everyone, though. One player couldn't be happier with his blue pubes. “Everyone now has a pseudo-unique skin tone and face.” Just like in real life, you are who you are, you can't change the color of your skin or your face. It's actually tied to your steamid.
“Right now the avatar is randomized across three things. Skin color, head mesh, and head material. We only have 2 face textures and 2 face materials, meaning there are 4 possible combinations. More of these will be added later (at which point the face will likely change).
“There’s still work to be done, so for now, consider this just boilerplate for an idea. It’s really nice to see different races working together in the game, and it makes you realize how arbitrary race is.” The community response has been mixed. There are several threads on the Steam forums where players are asking how they can change their race. But, on Reddit, there is a different answer.
Others hope that future updates will allow you to tattoo or brand your character so you can customize your appearance in addition to the immutable parts of your character. “There are many skin colors in the world,” “and it’s very easy to appear racially insensitive by doing this.
This is compounded by the fact that everyone is really used to seeing [the player model] as a white guy, so when you see him as a black guy it feels like he's just 'weird'. So a lot of time has been spent trying to reduce that effect.
