Do you want to use a different Apple ID or email address to send and receive messages via iMessage? Fortunately, this is pretty easy to do on a iPhone or with a iPad, and all it takes is a minute or two of your time.
Apple's iMessage service is very popular among Apple users as it offers a free and convenient way to send text messages to other iPhone, iPad and Android owners. MacBy default, iMessage uses the Apple ID that is linked to your device. iOS o iPadOS. Contacts who don't have your number will be able to send texts to this Apple ID email address. However, if you want, you can use a completely different Apple account to use with iMessage without affecting the data in other accounts linked to your device.
Most users shouldn't make this change and should just keep their iMessage settings as they are by default, but if you're interested in doing so, you can change your Apple ID for iMessage on both iPhone and iPad.
How to Change Apple ID for iMessage on iPhone and iPad
Switching to a different Apple account for iMessage is actually a lot easier than you think. Just follow the steps below to get started.
- Go to “Settings” from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
- In the Settings menu, scroll down and tap “Messages” to change your iMessage settings.
- Here, tap on “Send & Receive” as shown in the screenshot below to proceed to the next step.
- You'll now see the phone number and email address used to send and receive texts via iMessage. Tap your Apple ID at the bottom to access more options.
- You will find the option to log out of your iMessage account. Tap on “Log Out” to continue.
- You’ll now notice that you only use your phone number for iMessage. Tap on “Use your Apple ID for iMessage” as shown here.
- You will now be given the option to sign in with the Apple ID that is linked to your device. To use a different account, tap “Use a different Apple ID.”
- Now, enter the email address and password details of your alternate Apple ID and tap on “Sign In.”
That's it! You've successfully signed in to iMessage with a different Apple account.
From now on, you can keep your real Apple ID private while using a different account just for iMessage. In the same menu, you can change the sending and receiving addresses for iMessage. You can set it so that you no longer use your phone number for new iMessage conversations and keep your data private.
However, there is a drawback to this procedure: if you use a different Apple account for iMessage, you won't be able to use iCloud with iMessage, since the iCloud email address is the one linked to your device. As a result, your iMessage conversations won't sync across all your other Apple devices.
Remember that you can also remove an iCloud account from an iPhone or iPad and simply sign in with a completely different Apple ID if you want, but doing so obviously affects all other iCloud and Apple ID syncs that use the same Apple ID.
It's best to always use the same Apple ID for all of your devices, as this allows for reliable syncing, data backups, and easier use of devices.
