Free embroidery programs to download
We’ll start with the “big guns” that offer the most functionality but are harder to learn and then move on to software that covers a smaller niche. After that, we’ll let you know which paid programs have free trials, which is what we’d ultimately recommend if you’re serious about learning how to digitize embroidery.
If you want to digitize a few images and never revisit them, this will also be your best option. You also don't have to use the software brand that matches your machine brand. That being said, here are the best free embroidery software:
1. Inkscape and Ink/Stitch
The most complex and full-featured free embroidery digitizing software is Inkscape's Ink/Stitch extension. Inkscape itself is a vector graphics program open source that competes with Adobe Illustrator, a top-tier program for graphic designers.
The great thing about Inkscape is that there is the Ink/Stitch extension to help you digitize SVG files and create embroidery designs from scratch. It doesn't have many built-in fonts and there is a limit to what you can do with it.
However, it is the best free embroidery digitizing software by leaps and bounds and is quite possibly the only free embroidery design splitting and digitizing software that is updated regularly.
It is also one of the best free embroidery programs for mac, as the software options on Mac are significantly more limited than those on WindowsNow, the bad part about Ink/Stitch is that if you have no idea what an object, path, or node is, for example, you will have a hard time learning this software without substantial time input.
2. SophieSew
SophieSew used to be one of the best free embroidery digitizing software. It is a manual digitizing software that allows you to create your own embroidery designs and edit existing designs. If you are willing to overlook its buggy behavior and its obvious limitations compared to more up-to-date embroidery software, try another option.
It's sad that development is halted and tutorials are sparse for this program - it has quite a bit of potential as an easy-to-use alternative to Ink/Stitch! That said, this is the only other embroidery digitizing software that will always be free. So it's worth a try if you don't like Ink/Stitch.
3. Embrilliance Express
Embrilliance embroidery software is possibly The most popular embroidery softwareIt comes in different modules and allows you to purchase as you go. The most basic paid module, Embrilliance Essentials, is for basic editing and customization, while its most complex module, Stitch Artist 3, is a top-notch digitizing program.
One good thing about Embrilliance is that it offers a free demo software to try before you buy. However, the downside is that you can't save any of your work until you purchase the program. If you want to save work and are interested in using fonts, Embrilliance Express is a free software download that helps you work with .bx fonts.
With .bx and Embrilliance Express fonts, you can use your keyboard to type the letters instead of importing them one by one using embroidery software that allows you to combine designs. This is a great option if you use letters regularly.
4. 2Stitch Organizer
When looking for free embroidery software to download, don't forget 2Stitch Organizer. It's an embroidery software that lets you view designs and their properties on your Windows or macOS computer. Add your embroidery design folders to the program and then organize them easily.
if you pass There tagging and giving your designs additional information in the Notes section, there is a GREAT search feature. However, my favorite part of this free embroidery design software is that you can also search by maximum hoop size. This filters out the large designs and is helpful for those of us with small embroidery machines!
If you also click on «Reveal in Explorer» When you right-click on a design, you will go directly to the location where the file is saved on your computer. This helps you find designs that you want to delete or move to different folders on your computer.
5. My editor
My Editor is another free embroidery editing software. It has very basic abilities, but it's a good place to start, especially if you really just want to merge or resize designs. You can convert files from one format to another, change colors, and also rotate the design. It will even print a template of your design.
This helps align and center the design on your embroidery piece. The only odd thing about my editor was that it converted several files on my computer to the .ngs format. It turns out I had selected one of the incorrect stipulations on how to handle .ngs formats when I downloaded it. Keep an eye out for this!
6. Bernina Artlink 8
Bernina Artlink 8 is other basic embroidery editing software free with similar capabilities to the other free embroidery programs on this list. It's just the taste of Bernina's full embroidery software package.
Artlink allows for basic design resizing, rotation, and even duplication. You can combine embroidery designs, change thread colors, convert designs from one file format to another, and simulate a stitch of the design. If you have a Bernina embroidery machine, this is a good place to start if you also want very basic editing software.
7. Premier + 2
Premier + 2 Embroidery is part of an impressive embroidery software package. While you can't access much of the software for free, you will be able to use the basic features. It's fairly easy to use, but your options are minimal. In my opinion, it's worth the download if you're considering purchasing the full software later on.

8. StitchBuddy
StitchBuddy is a free machine embroidery editing software that works on Apple computers, iPhones, and iPads. The creator says that this program allows you to view, edit, and convert embroidery files. Combining designs, changing thread colors, making minor edits to existing designs, and even printing designs and templates are also features that are available.
9. Embroidery Explorer
Embroidery Explorer is essentially a free embroidery miniature softwareThis means that your computer displays an image of the embroidery design as a drawing or stitch simulation instead of its default icon. You can also view information about your embroidery files (the number of stitches, the design size, thread colors, and a slow stitch) of the design with this program.
Free Trial Options for Embroidery Digitizing Software
If you've found free embroidery programs too difficult to handle or don't feel like they do what you want, below are the embroidery software options that offer free trials with storage capability.
While these software aren't technically free, you can use them for free during the trial period. Note that Embird and Embrilliance also have free trials, but you can't save files. Brother also has free embroidery software for Brother (and other) embroidery machines available as a trial.
1. Sew What Pro
Sew What Pro is a very affordable embroidery editing and customization software. It offers a Free 30 days trialSew Art is the embroidery digitizing software that accompanies Sew What Pro. It is an automatic digitizing software, so you are limited in what you can digitize and how effective it will be.
For simple clip art images, the results are pretty good! However, it is not a program that allows you to create your own designs from scratch. That is, you will have to input an image into the program to begin the digitizing process. For beginners with no aspirations of ever selling designs, I think this is a great option.
2. Hatch 2
Hatch has 4 different modules that complement each other and can be purchased separately. I think it is the best embroidery digitizing software for non-commercial digitizers. There is also Shading Organizer, Shading Customizer, and Shading Embroidery Composer. Composer allows for automatic digitizing, so if you don't want to do a lot of manual creation, this is all you need.
3. Embroideryware
Embroideryware is a full-featured embroidery digitizing program that offers a 2 week free trial. Embroideryware also doesn't offer automatic digitizing, so only look at it if you're serious about manually creating your own images. It does, however, have a bevy of Facebook useful and lots of YouTube videos.
What is embroidery software?
An embroidery software uses the image uploaded by the user as well as the details entered such as the design size, stitch type, stitch direction, embroidery thread colors. Its function is to convert everything into a digital file that can be recognized by an embroidery machine.
How does embroidery software work?
Embroidery software converts an image/artwork into an embroidery file. This embroidery design file defines parameterized objects such as lines, lining columns or fill areas according to the user's needs. After conversion from vector format to stitch format, it is loaded into an embroidery machine.
Types of free embroidery software
To help you differentiate between free embroidery programs, it's important to know the different types of embroidery software available. Some free embroidery programs will only perform one of these functions below, while more advanced programs will perform most or all of these.
1. Free file converters
Si downloads If you have an embroidery file in a format that is not supported by your embroidery machine, you must convert it using a file converter. For example, I need to convert the .jef files I use on the Janome machine in our library to .pes files that I can use on the Brother embroidery machine at home. This is easily done with a file converter.
Embroidery file conversion simply means taking an embroidery design file from a machine format and converting it to another format. This does not mean uploading a .jpg, .svg, or .png image file and converting it to an embroidery design file.
2. Free thumbnail software
If you download embroidery designs to your computer, they do not display a picture of the design, but rather a generic icon. If you want your computer to display images of designs, you will need to download embroidery thumbnail software.
3. Free editing software
Embroidery editing or customization software allows the user to modify and enhance pre-digitized designs loaded into the program. I use the editing software to resize designs just right, break up large designs into smaller pieces, and add removable stitches and embroidery basting charts to designs.
The editing software also allows for thread color changes, basic editing of stitch properties, combining two or more designs, and much more!
4. Free Embroidery Digitizing Software
Hay two general types of embroidery digitizing: Automatic digitizing and manual digitizing. The former is done with the click of a button and some parameter specifications, while the latter requires time and experience. Manual digitizing produces the best embroidery designs and is the way commercial and professional digitizers produce images.
Regardless of the method, digitizing is the process of creating a new embroidery design using an image file (.svg, .png, .jpg, .bmp, for example) as a starting point or creating from scratch by hand. This is the most advanced type of embroidery software. As such, there are only a few free embroidery programs for manually digitizing. There are also no free automatic digitizing embroidery software options at this time.
5. Free font software
While many editing and digitizing software have font capabilities, there is also software geared directly toward working with letters and fonts to form words, names, monograms, and more. Depending on the program, you can use embroidery fonts you've downloaded in .bx or design file formats, or you can convert .ttf or .otf font files from your computer to embroidery designs. Converting .ttf files is kind of like automatic digitizing, meaning you get regular results.
